I recently saw the play Wicked on Broadway. I loved it and I think you will, too. It’s the story of the relationship between Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west and Glinda, the good witch of the south, from the Wizard of Oz movie we’ve all seen a number of times, I’m sure. I had premier center seats just six rows from the stage. As I stated in prior comments about other shows I’ve seen on Broadway, I love the stage changes and costumes and it’s nice to see all the action up close. I’m really impressed with the behind-the-scenes operations that go into pulling together such a spectacular show. The storyline is fantastic and so original. I never thought about the relationship between the two witches. In the play, we get to see how their friendship was formed in Oz, their interaction and antics in sorcery school, and the man that drove a temporary wedge between them. The play explains how Elphaba became green and what drove her to become the wicked witch. We also get to see how the flying monkeys got their wings. And, we get to see the various dimensions of Glinda’s personality. She wasn’t always the composed and graceful Glinda that we remember from the movie. The play is very entertaining and funny from beginning to end. The music is wonderful. There are several surprise scenes that I won’t mention here. I’ll leave those for you to experience, should you ever attend the play.
