Tis the season for fall charity events. I recently attended a fancy charity event; the perfect shindig to get all gussied up (something I like to do once in a while). My face was beat (that means I was in full make-up) and ready for the evening. Everyone was clean and dressed to the nines carrying in big checks for a very worthy cause. We were all amped for the silent auction that was going to taking place. As soon as I entered the room, things went from normal to slow motion. My nostrils slowly turned to the right toward the aroma of hors d’oeuvre and dinner treats nicely displayed on velvet-draped tables (no kidding – it was genuine silk velvet) standing side-by-side against the wall. My eyes, though, slowly turned to the left toward the numerous dessert trays also enticingly displayed. My feet tried to walk a straight path to my seat, but my brain made my toes detour over to the food. With all the fanfare over the food, the tastiest eat by far was the fig and fancy cheese on a skewer (yes, it sounds simple, but it was hauntingly delicious). I ate so many that at one point I tried to shield my face from anyone noticing that I had yet again gone back for more and some more and then some more. To make up for gorging myself on figs and cheese, I made a silent bid for a fancy spa treatment. After listening to a live jazz quartet (they sounded really good), followed by several speeches about the charity, I sauntered off into the moonlight, belly fully satiated. I opted not to stay for the result of the silent auction. I figured since I’d left my check for the charity and didn’t think my bid would win the fancy spa treatment anyway, I needed not stick around. Lo and behold, I received a phone call the following morning saying my bid had won the spa treatment. Oops! I guess I should’ve stayed longer. All kidding aside, if we all did a little something to help a worthy cause, either by donating to a charity or by hands-on involvement, the world would be a better place. There’s only one mankind (as far as I know). Let’s save us. Give something. Do something with your voice, your heart, your pocket, your wisdom, your resolve. All of the good you could offer will matter to someone who feels like nothing. You’d be surprised at the impact you alone could have on someone’s life. I’m just saying.
